Question Windows Vista and GW audio issue.

I have installed windows vista and do get the reported FPS boost other people talk about. BUT...
I now hear no ingame speech. I have 5.1, card that supports it, Speaker set that is 5.1, I can hear all the ingame music and battle sounds, just no speech when it comes time. The music and battle sounds can be heard over the center speaker.
I have tried, another sound card and another speaker set with the same results, so obviously its a software issue or setting. Any Ideas?

P.S. I have the latest vista sound drivers for my card. Also, it worked fine on xp with the same configuration... ;P

Could be your gw client, not vista/sound driver related

Make sure you have EAX sound turned off, and try messing with the Sound Quality and Hardware Audio options in Guild Wars. The way sound is handled by Vista is vastly different from XP, but you should be able to get it to work with some setting.

make sure your sounds drivers are upto date and that the sound is going tot he right unit, vista has more sound options than XP, so make sure you have set them right

Just an FYI if you are looking for EAX in vista and own a recent Creative Labs card

If you want to pay for it
http://buy.soundblaster.com/_creativ...67VH L73GYR38

"In Windows Vista, Microsoft removed the Vendor Extension mechanism from Vista's DirectSound implementation. With previous Windows Operating Systems, the Vendor Extension enabled the Sound Blaster Audigy to provide accelerated audio for DirectSound3D games.
Without Creative ALchemy,most DirectSound games running in Vista will be reduced to stereo output without any EAX effects.
Creative ALchemy (Audigy Edition) restores your Sound Blaster Audigy's ability to process EAX effects, 3D surround sound, sampling rate conversion and hardware audio mixing for DirectSound3D games in Windows Vista."

if you want to do some hacking and don't have an X-FI card this may still work

download 1.00.03 alchemy for X-Fi
It can be found on creative.com forums
http://forums.creative.com/creativel...ssage.id=18972

copy dsound.dll and dsound.ini to a supported titles folder. Then edit the dsound.ini file.

dsound.ini

Buffers <-- #buffers to use (default is 4)
Duration <-- buffer duration (default is 25)
DisableDirectMusic <-- disable DirectMusic support (default is False)
MaxVoiceCount <-- maximum number of voices to support (default is 128)

SB Live
Buffers=1
Duration=6
DisableDirectMusic=False
MaxVoiceCount=32

Audigy/Audigy2/Audigy2 ZS/Audigy4 sound cards
Buffers=2
Duration=12
DisableDirectMusic=False
MaxVoiceCount=64

These should work, you may have to try different values.

------------
Check your sound options in guild wars.

Is your sound actually set up in the control panel? Speech comes through the center speaker and if you got a 5.1 set but configured as stereospeakers (default), you actually dont have surround sound but just the same stereo channel through all speakers.

Yeah its all configured in 5.1 and I have the latest drivers for my card. Dunno yet, still no voices, and the surround all works properly, like left side right side and rears, as I spin around to the noise. Just no speech lol. Odd. I have since noticed tho that the eax option is disabled in GW wars, which was definatly available for me in xp. Maybey Ill try alchemy or try and find some newer creative beta drivers.

Vista is a plague upon humanity. Get a second hard drive, put XP on it, and boot as necessary. HD1 if you want to play or HD2 to have your shiny new OS that's more trouble than it's worth.

The FPS boost is probably more processing power because it's not doing the voices.

Vista is not that bad, no matter how enjoyable randomly demonising it may seem.

I've actually had a 5-10% FPS boost with Vista, and voices work fine for me. The game seems to load faster too.

Well, speech is usually mapped to the center speaker in 5.1, so make sure you check both the Sound control panel and your sound card's specific control panel to make sure both are set to 5.1 sound. Sorry if that's kind of a dumb suggestion, but it really sounds like you might be set to 2 Speakers in the OS somewhere.
